A Letter to my Daughter on her 2nd Birthday

My Dearest Sidney Grace,

You are the happiest little girl I know and have ever seen.

You see all the beautiful things around you.

You always hear the birds.

You just love your own ability to kick and throw balls.

You get so damn excited by your confidence in climbing trees and mastering playing equipment.

When you hear the bikes in the traffic, you point them out with an excitement second to none.

You are in awe of the abilities of something as simple as a bicycle.

You see all the beauty and all the different colours and all the leaves in one single flower.

Balloons are like little guilty pleasures in your life.

A single coat of nail polish brings endless joy to you.

A simple hat, bag or accessory makes your day.

You build blocks and puzzles and you colour and draw with passion.

You garden and play in the dirt with intent.

You are enthusiastic about your school and you share all its marvels with us every time we collect you. We just love school-time play with you.

You passionately indulge in your food and you’re always keen to try new things.

When I introduce you to a friend or a character, you only love them.

You adore your family and my friends so fiercely, especially those who you identify by name.

You are the happiest little girl I have ever seen.

I just want to keep it this way and I don’t know how.

I love you so much that it feels like it’s breaking my heart sometimes.

I don’t know what I am doing right and what I am doing wrong.

I often want to quit our journey.

I often question myself.

I am often in a place of not knowing whether to promote you or protect you in certain situations.

I don’t know where all of this is going.

I don’t know what I am doing.

I get messages from parents all the time to let me know how much I am helping, encouraging and inspiring them.

I still don’t know if this is right for you.

I don’t know what I am doing.

You don’t know what you are doing either.

You cannot even begin to comprehend what you are doing, my girl.

You have no idea how many babies you are helping to get a good night’s sleep.

You don’t know how many babies you are helping to eat a balanced diet.

You don’t know how many children you are helping to grow up with good posture.

You don’t know how many kids you are helping to breathe through their nose instead of their mouth.

You have no idea how many kids you are helping with their dental health.

You don’t know how many kids you are helping to use the power of their imagination.

I can go on.

You don’t know what you are doing.

You are the happiest little girl I have seen.

We don’t know what we are doing.

But we are in this together.

I am so proud of you.

Please continue to hold my hand.

Please continue to show me the way.

Happy Birthday to you, my angel.

You’re my best!

Love Always,

Mom
